Late Friday night, Air India Express flight IX-1344 from Dubai was involved in an accident on 2020 August 7 at Calicut. The DGCA said the Dubai-Kozhikode Air India flight fell down into the valley after landing at Runway 10 of Karipur Airport and broke down in two pieces.
The aircraft left from Stand E6 and took off from runway 30-R at Dubai International Airport on 7 August 2020, at 14:14 GST and was scheduled to arrive at Calicut International Airport in Kozhikode, Kerala, India at 19:40 IST as part of the Vande Bharat Mission – a scheme to bring back Indian from abroad during this Covid-19 pandemic time.
As per source, total of 189 passengers had booked tickets, but only 184 boarded the flight, according to officials. 17 people dead as BOEING 737 with 191 (including pilot and flight staff) on board skids off tabletop runway amid heavy rain and lands in a narrow valley.
The aircraft managed to arrive to the airport on-time and circled above the runway whilst waiting for clearance before making a landing on runway No. 10.Due to the monsoon in Kerala at this time, both weather conditions and visibility were very poor. The aircraft failed to stop before the end of the tabletop runway and plunged 30 feet (9.1 m) into a ravine, splitting into two parts upon impact.
The aircraft registration serial no was VT-AXH and manufacturer’s serial number 36323, line number 2108.It started its operation on 15 November 2006. At the time of the accident, the aircraft was 13.7 years old.The aircraft was commanded by Wing Commander Captain Deepak Vasant Sathe, who was a test pilot with the Indian Air Force before Air India Express and Akhilesh Kumar was the co-pilot.
